Our mission is to promote the Chinese Culture to the community through education, music, performance, and leadership. Our values include culture, community, family, and fellowship.
The San Antonio Lion Dance Association (SALDA) was established in San Antonio, TX as a non-profit organization in 1997. It was founded by Dr. CK Tan, Dwan Andre, Dr. Alfred Chen, Allen Kong and Michael Wu. It's objective was to provide its members guidance and knowledge, while developing strength, coordination, and agility in performing the Chinese cultural Lion Dance. The lion used by the organization is the Southern style lion.
Chinese Lion Dance is a staple of traditional Chinese culture. With foundations in traditional Chinese martial arts, historically being performed by Kung Fu schools, the Lion Dance is performed as a ceremony to chase away evil spirits and to bring good luck and good fortune. It is performed all year round for many occasions to include weddings, new business openings, festivals, but is most commonly seen during the Lunar New Year.
